“Rhythms: A collection of pleated drawings

Come lose yourself in the hypnotic rhythms and serene beauty of Carole Bury’s pleated landscapes. Discover the poetry of paper, the harmony of handwork, and the quiet power of an artist’s journey across paths both real and imagined.

This exhibition invites art lovers, wanderers, and everyone with an appreciation for the great outdoors to explore Carole’s intricate hand-crafted paper textiles inspired by the landscapes she loves.

Her works offer a profound visual journey—her artwork captures the subtle dialogues between nature and traveller. With a deep-rooted love for the countryside, she infuses her pieces with a sense of calm beauty and rhythmic movement, evoking memories of paths travelled and features discovered. The delicate textures and serene shades in her work conjure the quiet awe of landscapes, translating their intricate rhythms into crafted pleated structures that breathe with life.

Using a hand-operated pleating machine—a compact marvel of brass rollers and curved needles—Carole meticulously folds, pleats, and compresses her monochromatic ink and graphite drawings. Her textured paper structures, bound with threads of cotton, linen, and silk, transform into abstract landscapes that trace life’s journeys and invite viewers to share in her reverent wanderings. Each pleat becomes a moment of reflection, a tribute to nature’s quiet splendour, and a reminder that, as with any journey, the destination is secondary to the steps along the way.

For Carole, who lives and creates in a serene studio perched high in the Cotswold Hills, the landscapes that inform her work are more than mere inspirations—they are collaborators. Her drawings, transformed through repetition and pleating, suggest geological narratives of ancient trails and hidden histories. Every twist of thread and fold of paper becomes an homage to the textures and tracks of our world.
