Artist in Residence: Edith Pargh Barton

  • Bannatyne Hotel & Spa Battle Road Hastings East Sussex United Kingdom (map)

New York born artist Edith Pargh Barton is a painter and textile artist. Her work is an unconscious instinct that reflects her emotions at the time it is being executed.

She uses all manner of implements, both handmade and shop bought to make marks on canvas as well as using hand and machine stitching on her fabric sculptures to tell her story.

Her intuitive style requires much contemplation and sketches before the process of actually making commences. But when Edith does finally get in to her studio to paint, she works fast, often completing several works in quick succession. This energy ensures a loose stye juxtaposed with intimate intuitive mark making, giving the viewer a pathway in to the story she is trying to tell.

Both colour and shape are important to Edith;

“When I paint, I start with a limited colour palette of red, yellow, blue, and white. From these a wider variety of colours emerge, reflecting my mood and my feelings. For a piece to be ‘finished’ the colours must feel right.”

Much of the artwork included in this exhibition has been inspired by the time Edith has spent in Cornwall over the years with family and friends, often wandering off on her own to capture a moment.
