Applying for funding will be a requirement for most artists at some point in their professional career.

This quick 1 minute read covers the essentials every artist should consider in order to increase their chances of success.

1 . Do your research

  • Pick a fund aligned to your niche/need

  • Check you are eligible

  • Check the activity you want funded is eligible

  • Check and understand the funding criteria

  • Check and understand how much money the funder is offering: Is it sufficient? Does it require match funding?

  • What documentation do you need to provide to: Support your application? Prove you have undertaken the activity if funded?

2. Read and answer the questions!

  • Sounds so simple – biggest mistake happens right here!

  • Use the language/terminology of the funder when answering their questions

  • Answer the questions directly and clearly

  • Do not waffle – every word matters

  • Stick to the word/character count

3. Ask for support

  • If the funder offers support take it

4. Create a draft

  • Draft your answers in a word doc in advance

  • Ask someone to proof read for you before you submit

  • Ask someone to spell check for you before you submit

5. Congruency

  • Ensure your answers are consistent across the document

  • Ensure your application reads as one application – all parts in synergy

6. Deadlines

  • Know the deadline

  • DO NOT leave your application to the last minute! – what if the internet crashes….
